From jump parks to backyards, trampolines have been growing in popularity across the United States. However, as the number of trampolines rises, so does the number of trampoline-related injuries, especially injuries sustained by kids looking to have some fun.

Dr. Amy Harlow, MD, from Pediatric Orthopedics of Southwest Florida, joined ABC7 to discuss how you can keep your kids safe as they jump around.

The most common injuries are sprains and fractures. Overall, more than 90% of trampoline injuries are sustained by children — mostly between the ages of 5 and 14. More than three-quarters of trampoline injuries occur when two or more children are jumping at the same time and collide. Most injuries occur when participants are unsupervised.

Harlow explains that research indicates that trampolines should not be used in the home environment, routine PE classes or in outdoor playgrounds. Children under the age of 6 should be prohibited from using trampolines. Recreational use should always be supervised, and spotters should be utilized. Harlow also said that there should only be one person at a time on the trampoline.
